Apollo Bay Hotel. Great Ocean Rd, Apollo Bay, Victoria
July 14, 2015
As we were in Melbourne for a few days, we thought we would visit the Great Ocean Road where the 12 Apostles lie. Along the way, we stopped by at Apollo Bay Hotel for a quick lunch before heading off to see the 12 Apostles. Apollo Bay Hotel is a humble hotel located in Apollo Bay, situated with a magnificent views of the ocean and mountains, a popular tourist hotel when wanting to stay over while taking a trip down to the 12 Apostles.
(Excuse the poor quality photos of the food)
The restaurant was quite empty but there were a few families or couples and groups of tours dining in when we arrived. We were seated and were given the menu. We weren't sure of how the food would be but were expecting Tavern food at the most. We ordered a Chicken Schnitzel ($21), a crumbed chicken breast served with chips, salad and your choice of gravy, garlic butter, pepper or mushroom sauce which we chose the pepper sauce. When it came out, it definitely looked like Tavern food but it was also quite sloppy. The pepper sauce was dripping down and also, the salad did not look fresh at all. Fresh greens? Don't think so.
The Chicken Schnitzel wasn't the best, it was rather bland but the chicken was cooked well, a thin layer of crumbs and pouring the pepper sauce helped, but again, the pepper sauce wasn't that great either. The chips were cooked nicely and crispy, the not-so-fresh salad was just okay but it just didn't look appetizing at all. The whole dish just looked a bit sloppy..
Soup of the Day was the Minestrone soup served with a thick toast and butter. When it first came out, you could smell the aroma of the vegetables in the soup. I have to say, the soup was hearty and warm for a chilly day, great to have a slab of buttered toast dipped into it. It was quite filling I have to say despite that it was just soup and a slice of toast.
I would like to try their other dishes, maybe they were better or even other restaurants or food joints around would be interesting to try out
