Maru Korean BBQ Restaurant, Elizabeth St, Brisbane CBD, Brisbane

December 14, 2012

It's been awhile since I've eaten at Maru and one afternoon, decided to come here to have some random catch up with friends.. Weren't that hungry so we just ordered two dishes... I still remember the times where I used to go to Maru frequently but not much now anymore... Though I think that this is maybe one of the best Korean restaurants located in the Brisbane CBD...
Complimentary side dishes are given along with water as customers are seated and have a look through the menu and whilst waiting for their meals to come. These side dishes are called "Ban-chan" in Korean and are usually varied from cold noodle salad, pasta tuna salad, spicy marinated cucumber slices, rice cake, Kim chi and lots more...
Kimchi is a definite side dish that would be given to each table as Kim chi is considered a side dish that Koreans would not eat without... It simply just has to be on the table...
Sometimes the waiters are nice so when you do ask for more or a refill for any of your side dishes, if you ask for more, sometimes they do actually give alot... Compare these two photos below with the photos of the same side dishes above... They are particularly double the size that they are usually given usually to the diners..

What we ordered was the Spicy Bossam and the Fried Prawn Salad...
The salad was simple, not using and mixing too much combination of many different vegetables mixed into one dish... The sauce however of the salad was somewhat a mustard mayonnaise taste... However, the sauce for the prawns which was a creamy sauce that I thought was mayonnaise but came to realise that it wasn't, was delish... Prawns were fried and the batter was not too thick which was good...
Spicy Bossam... Generally, there would only be non-spicy Bossam in Korean restaurants.. However, since we wanted something porkish, and saw that this was a Spicy version of Bossam, we decided to give this a try...
For those who aren't familiar with "Bossam", it simply is steamed pork which is usually eaten when wrapped in a leaf vegetable such as red lettuce or sesame leaf... But in some restaurants, they simply just serve it with Kimchi or just vegetables on the side.. Bossam typically is a good dish to eat when drinking Soju...
This spicy bossam, at first I thought that they were abit small on portion wise with the shallots/spring oninos and sliced onions on the side which basically filled half of the plate which I thought they could've decreased the portion down and instead made the pork more.. Dried chilli and sesame seed were topped on the steamed spicy pork.. However, I did not find it as spicy as I thought...
